Your DJ shapes the whole feel of your wedding — the ceremony, the golden hour, the dancefloor everyone remembers. Yet couples often book on price alone and find out too late what wasn't included. These are the ten questions I'd want a couple to ask any DJ in Barbados before signing — including me.
1. Do you plan our songs in advance?
You want a DJ who agrees your must-plays, do-not-plays, first dance and key moments with you before the day — not one who improvises blind. Advance planning is the single biggest sign of a professional.
2. Is professional sound included — and suited to our venue?
Confirm the sound, DJ booth, mics and lighting are included and matched to your specific venue. A beach or villa needs a different setup to a ballroom.
3. Do you bring backup equipment?
Gear can fail, especially outdoors. A pro carries backup so the music never stops. If the answer is vague, that's a red flag.
4. Have you played our venue, or one like it?
Experience with a similar beach, villa or resort setting means fewer surprises with power, layout and sound.
5. Do you provide microphones and MC the key moments?
Speeches, the entrance, the first dance and announcements need a mic and someone to steer them. Ask whether light MC duties are included.
6. How do you read and respond to the room?
A great DJ adjusts live — reading when to lift the energy and when to hold it. Ask how they handle a slow dancefloor or an unexpected request.
7. Exactly what's included — and what costs extra?
Get the hours, setups, equipment and any add-ons (uplighting, extra time, a second location) in writing so there are no surprises.
8. Will you coordinate with our planner and venue?
Your DJ should talk directly to your planner and venue about timings and the run of show, so the day flows without you managing it.
9. What happens if you're ill or can't make it?
Ask about their contingency. A serious professional has a plan so your day is never left uncovered.
10. Can you handle an international guest list?
Destination weddings mix cultures and generations. Ask how they keep everyone dancing — and, if it matters, whether they can MC in more than one language. (I work in English, Swedish and Mandarin.)
The short version
If a DJ plans in advance, brings professional and backed-up sound, is clear about what's included, coordinates with your team and can read a room — you're in good hands. Vague answers on planning, backup or pricing are the warning signs.
